Description

Date of construction – 1723 – 1726

Cathedral and bell tower are performed in Russian (“Naryshkin”) baroque style, which was very popular in Russia at the end of XVII – beginning of XVIII centuries. Décor, numerous façade details and their bright colors, which survived till today gives the cathedral unique look. Unfortunately, the names of the constructors of the temple are unknown. All the guests of the city admired the cathedral. The description of the cathedral can be found in works of Aleksandr Gumboldt and Aleksandr Duma. The cathedral was known since 1565. At that time on the place of the nowadays cathedral was situated small wooden Peter’s and Paul’s church. One of its parishioners was Kazan merchant Ivan Mikhlyaev. The emperor Peter I stayed in Mikhlyaev’s house in 1772 and in commemoration of that event Mikhlyaev decided to build cathedral instead of small church. Ancient seven-tier icon stand, richly decorated in Russian baroque traditions is still kept in the cathedral. One of the main relics of the cathedral are miracle-working Smolensk-Sedmiozernaya Icon of Our Lady and Iverskaya Icon of Our Lady. The public worship is performed every day: mass – 8 a.m.; evening service – 5 p.m.
