When in 1654-1655 anthrax epidemic captured Kazan, the authorities decided to bring to Kazan miracle-working Smolensk icon of Our Lady. The disease retreated when the icon stayed in Kazan. Then it was decided to bring the icon to Kazan every year; and Holy Cross was erected on the place of the icon meeting. This event is considered to be first step of the monastery origin. The monastery complex was finished and consecrated in 1701. The Kizichesky settlement was connected with the city by the floating bridge, and then by Kizicheskaya dam, which is today known as Leninskaya dam. Public services are performed daily: evening service at 4 p.m., morning service at 8 p.m. (on holidays at 6 a.m. and 8.30 a.m.)
