Ilsur Metshin, Mayor of Kazan
I am glad to welcome you on behalf of the hospitable citizens of the thousand-year-old city of Kazan – the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan!
Kazan is located in the centre of Russia, on the bank of the beautiful Volga River, approximately 800 kilometres to the east of Moscow. Born at the juncture of two cultures, Kazan became a place where Europe meets Asia. The territory of the Kazan Kremlin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the largest mosque in Europe, Kul Sharif, and the Orthodox Annunciation Cathedral stand side-by-side.
In its historical and architectural preservation and value, Kazan is rated class “A”, alongside Moscow and Saint Petersburg. With its well-developed tourist infrastructure, the city combines its rich cultural heritage with a European standard of service.
The recreation and entertainment sectors make Kazan an attractive city for tourists. The city's entertainment venues and establishments stay open until morning. Furthermore, there are great opportunities for outdoor recreation; the city offers its guests an alpine ski resort, golf course and club, sporting clubs and retreats, equestrian sport complexes, a carting club and much more.
We are always glad to see the guests of the Fedor Shalyapin International Opera Festival, Rudolf Nuriev Classical Ballet Festival, Europe-Asia Festival of Contemporary Music, Creation of Peace International Music Festival and Aksenov-Fest. By taking part in Russian and Tatar national holidays, you can learn more about the particularities of national colour and local culture in Kazan.
In 2013, Kazan will host tens of thousands of sportsmen and guests from all over the world for the Summer Universiade – the World Student Games.
With its more than one thousand years of history, our city has something to be proud of and something to show our guests.
Welcome to Kazan!
